QMED-F=Boiler Technician/Oiler/Watertender (Formerly FOWT)

This course is a self-paced online format based on the 150 hour standard classroom QMED-FOWT Course.

  • A mariner who successfully completes the course within 1 year of application will satisfy the professional examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.501(c)(5) for national rating endorsements as QMED-Oiler and Boiler Technician/Watertender.

A smart phone, tablet or computer is required to work through the course.

The following is the minimum computer requirements for the final proctor exams:

  • Desktop or laptop computer (Mac, Windows, or Chromebook)
  • Windows 7 or newer / macOS 10.10 or newer

National Designated Duty Engineer (DDE) 1000 to 4000 HP-Motor

Any applicant who has successfully completes Beacon Maritime Training's Designated Duty Engineer (DDE) 1000/4000 Horsepower (BEMART-156) course within one year of the date of submitting a complete application will:

•  Satisfy the professional examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(j) for a national officer endorsement as Designated Duty Engineer Less Than 4,000 HP Motor under 46 CFR 11.524. This approval is limited to the original issuance of Designated Duty Engineer Less Than 4,000 HP Motor only. Any other endorsement sought in conjunction with this approval will require the successful completion of the USCG-administered examination for that endorsement;

OR

•   Receive 45 days of sea service credit that can be applied toward the service requirements of 46 CFR 11.524(b)(1) for a credential as Designated Duty Engineer of Motor Propelled Vessels of Unlimited Horsepower.

•  This course does not satisfy any STCW competency or training. Application of this course for endorsement may be used for only one transaction.

QMED-Oiler Course Update

Beacon Maritime Training recently received guidance from the U.S. Coast Guard requiring revisions to the current QMED-Oiler course delivery structure, including updates related to delivery methods and examination procedures.

The current course approval remains active during the Coast Guard’s correction period. The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed that course completion certificates issued within 90 days of April 29, 2026, will continue to be accepted for credentialing purposes.

Currently enrolled students are strongly encouraged to complete the course requirements no later than July 28, 2026. Certificates issued after this date cannot be guaranteed to be accepted under the current course approval structure.

This course is a self-paced online format based on the standard 40 hour in person course, the IMO Model Course 7.17: Engine-Room Resource Management and IMO Model Course 1.39: Leadership and Teamwork.

  • Engine Room Resource Management training requirements in 46 CFR 11.325(a)(3)(i) and (b)(1); 46 CFR 11.327(a)(3)(i) and (b)(1); 46 CFR 11.329(a)(4)(iv); 46 CFR 11.331(a)(3)(i) and (b)(1); and 46 CFR 11.333(a)(3)(i) and (b)(1)

AND;

  • The Leadership and Teamworking Skills within 46 CFR 11.329(c);
