National OMED-OILER Course

This course is a self-paced online format based on the 120 hour standard classroom QMED-Oiler Course.  Upon completion you may present your course certificate to the USCG within one year in lieu of Coast Guard examination.  This certificate will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.501(c)(5) for national rating endorsement as QMED-Oiler.

Job Responsibilities

A QMED is a crucial ship engineering team member, assisting with maintenance, operation, and repair of the vessel's propulsion system and vital machinery under licensed engineers' supervision.

Required Knowledge and Skills

QMEDs need a strong understanding of marine engineering principles and proficiency in technical skills related to ship machinery and systems.

Key Duties

QMEDs perform routine inspections, troubleshoot mechanical issues, maintain engine logs, and operate equipment like generators, pumps, and boilers

Work Environment and Hierarchy

QMEDs work in the ship's engineering department under licensed engineers, ensuring safe and efficient operation of mechanical systems.

This course is a self-paced online format based on the 120 hour standard classroom QMED-Oiler Course.

Diesel Engines

Components, operation, maintenance, trouble-shooting, and safety procedures. Focuses on marine applications, fuel systems, and performance optimization for QMEDs.

Personal protective equipment, hazard identification, fire prevention, emergency procedures, electrical safety, and proper handling of machinery and chemicals.

Hand Tools

Proper use, maintenance, and safety of wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, hammers, chisels, files, and measuring tools in marine engineering tasks.

Electricity

Electrical theory, marine electrical systems, circuit diagrams, troubleshooting, safety procedures, and maintenance of shipboard electrical equipment and generators.

Bearings

Types, functions, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of bearings in marine machinery. Includes lubrication systems, alignment, and wear analysis.

Operation principles, maintenance procedures, safety protocols, water treatment, combustion systems, and common troubleshooting techniques for shipboard applications.

Types of lubricants, lubrication systems, oil analysis, proper application techniques, maintenance schedules, and troubleshooting for marine machinery and equipment.

Course Requirements

The following is the minimum computer requirements:
Desktop or laptop computer (Mac or Windows-based PC).  Chromebooks are also acceptable.
Windows PCs require a minimum of Windows 7.
Macs require a minimum of macOS 10.10. 
Minimum Recommended Speeds:
Internet  1 Mbps – Download
Internet 1 Mbps – Upload
Google Chrome web browser, version 74 or higher
Web Camera (final exams only)
Microphone (final exams only)

Testing Requirements:
QMED-General: 50 Questions 70% to pass
QMED-Motors: 50 Questions 70% to pass
All exams are conducted online within the course in partnership with our proctoring provider, SmarterServices.

Sea Service Requirements:
Applicants must meet the USCG requirements for sea service and endorsement qualifications.  QMED 12.501
