From Wiper to Chief: The Engineering Ladder

A step-by-step roadmap detailing the exact credentials, exams, and sea time required to advance from an unlicensed engine hand to Chief Engineer.


So you want to run the engine room someday. Good news: it’s one of the most well-marked career paths in the maritime industry. There’s no mystery about what comes next — just a clear ladder of credentials, sea time, and exams, one rung after another. The catch is that it takes years, patience, and a lot of paperwork.

Here’s the whole climb, laid out so you know exactly what’s ahead.

Rung 1: Wiper

Everybody starts here. As a Wiper, you’re the newest set of hands in the engine department — cleaning up oil, wiping down machinery, and doing the small maintenance jobs nobody else wants. It’s not glamorous, but it’s the entry point for literally every Chief Engineer sailing today.

What you need: You just need to be 18, pass a physical and a drug test, and get your basic Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with a Wiper endorsement. No exam required to start.

What you’re doing: Building sea time. Every day you spend working in the engine department counts toward your next step.

Rung 2: QMED (Qualified Member of the Engine Department)

Once you’ve logged about six months (roughly 180 days) working as a Wiper, you’re eligible to test for QMED. This is a big deal — it’s the senior rating in the engine room, and it’s also the entry point for every licensed engineering officer position above it.

What you need:

  • Around 180 days of sea service in the engine department
  • To pass the QMED exam for your chosen rating (Oiler, Junior Engineer, Machinist, Electrician, Pumpman, etc. — you can stack multiple ratings, or test for “QMED Any Rating” if you pass them all)

What you’re doing: From here, you’re no longer just cleaning — you’re inspecting equipment, maintaining pumps and generators, and taking on real responsibility in daily engine room operations.

Rung 3: Third Assistant Engineer (a.k.a. Fourth Engineer)

This is where you go from unlicensed crew to licensed officer — and it’s a significant jump. Third Assistant Engineer is the most junior engineering officer rank, but it comes with a real Coast Guard license and standing watches on your own.

What you need:

  • Roughly 1,080 days of engine room service, with at least 720 of those days served as a QMED (or an approved training program that substitutes for some of that time)
  • Passing the Third Assistant Engineer exam at a Coast Guard Regional Exam Center
  • If you went the academy route instead of “hawsepiping” your way up, a completed engineering program plus a shorter sea service requirement can get you here faster

What you’re doing: Standing engine room watches, supervising Oilers and other unlicensed crew, and generally getting your first real taste of officer-level responsibility.

Note: many mariners take a slightly different path here through Designated Duty Engineer (DDE) licenses, which qualify you to run smaller vessels’ engine departments solo. It’s a popular route for towboats, OSVs, and other workboats, and it can run in parallel with — or instead of — the assistant engineer ladder, depending on the kind of vessels you want to work on. There are two tiers:

  • DDE 1,000 HP: around 360 days of service in the engine room, with at least 180 of those days served as a QMED (or equivalent).
  • DDE 4,000 HP: around 1,080 days of service in the engine room, with at least 540 of those days served as a QMED (or equivalent) — though academy graduates can qualify much faster, sometimes with as little as 60 days of additional engine room service or an approved training program, plus a letter of recommendation.

Rung 4: Second Assistant Engineer (a.k.a. Third Engineer)

Time to move up again. As Second Assistant Engineer, you’re usually responsible for boilers, auxiliary machinery, feed and condensate systems, and keeping tabs on the chemicals and lube oil testing aboard.

What you need:

  • Additional sea time served at your current license level (the exact number of days depends on your license and vessel horsepower — it typically runs several hundred days)
  • A new round of Coast Guard exams covering more advanced engineering topics

What you’re doing: More systems, more responsibility, and you’re now supervising junior engineers and coordinating maintenance across a bigger slice of the engine room.

Rung 5: First Assistant Engineer (a.k.a. Second Engineer)

This is the second-in-command spot in the engine department, reporting directly to the Chief. If the Chief is out, you’re often the one who steps up.

What you need:

  • 360 days of service as a Second Assistant Engineer (Third Engineer), with at least a third of that time on the specific propulsion type (steam, motor, or gas turbine) you’re licensed for
  • Passing the First Assistant Engineer exam

What you’re doing: Running the daily maintenance and operation of the whole engine department, assigning duties to the unlicensed crew, and standing the demanding 4-to-8 watch.

Rung 6: Chief Engineer

The top of the ladder. As Chief, you’re in charge of the entire engineering department — every system, every piece of machinery, every engineer and unlicensed crew member below you answers to you. It’s the destination every rung before this one was building toward.

What you need:

  • 1,080 days of service as an officer in charge of an engineering watch on vessels of 1,000 HP or more — though this can drop to 720 days if you’ve already served 360 days as a First Assistant Engineer on larger vessels (4,000 HP or more)
  • Passing the Chief Engineer exam
  • Ongoing recency requirements — you need to have logged sea time in recent years to keep your license current, not just earn it once

What you’re doing: Everything. You’re accountable for the safe, efficient operation of the vessel’s entire mechanical and electrical systems, and for the training and performance of everyone in your department.

How long does the whole climb take?

Realistically, most mariners are looking at somewhere between 8 and 12 years from their first day as a Wiper to earning a Chief Engineer’s license — sometimes faster if you go the academy route (a 4-year maritime academy degree can shortcut a lot of the sea time requirements), sometimes slower depending on how much sea time you’re able to log each year.

The important thing to remember: every single rung is built on sea time plus an exam. There’s no shortcut around either one. But there’s also no mystery step where you suddenly need connections or luck — just consistent time on the water and steady progress through the license levels.
